오롯이 바라본, 선명한 이야기

이탈리아 음식은 재료의 특성이 뚜렷하게 드러난다. 와인의 맛도 선명하다. 세상에는 복잡한 하모니가 주는 아름다움도 있지만, 선명하게 솟아오른 단순한 아름다움이 필요한 순간도 있다. 그림에 보이는 존재들은 마치 이탈리아 음식처럼 오해의 여지 없이 선명하다. 치밀한 계획 하에 복잡하게 얽힌 조화를 추구하기보다 마음이 가리키는 방향을 따르는 작가, Shawn Park이다.
음식과 미술은 과거부터 밀접한 관계였다. 무언가 먹고 마시는 장면을 그린 명화들은 물론, 디저트를 그리는 웨인 티보처럼 한 가지 음식만 반복해 재현하는 화가들도 있다. 심지어 현대의 작가들은 직접 요리를 하고 미술관에 식당을 차린다. 리크리트 티라바니자는 <무제-공짜>(1992)에서 관객들에게 팟타이와 카레를 나누어 주었다. 관객과 소통하는 동시에 미술관이라는 고고한 공간을 일상으로 끌어 내려 대중과 공유하는 플랫폼으로 전복하는 시도이기도 했다. 이렇게 작가들은 음식, 또는 먹는 행위가 가지는 특성에서부터 새로운 통찰을 끌어냈다.
미술에서 시작해 음식을 발견한 작가들과 달리, Shawn Park 작가는 반대로 음식으로부터 미술로 향한다. 요리를 위해 매일 재료를 다루다 보면, 천연 식재료 고유의 색깔이나, 잘랐을 때 보이는 단면처럼 다른 사람들은 쉽게 발견하기 어려운 아름다움이 보인다. 가까이서 바라보고 만져본 사람만이 포착할 수 있는 새로운 면이다. 그는 매일 발견하는 그 아름다움을 꾸미지 않고 담백하게 표현한다.
작가는, 예쁜 것이 너무 많으면 모두 예쁘게 느껴지기 어렵고, 맛있는 재료를 모두 모아 만든다고 해서 꼭 맛있는 요리가 탄생하지는 않는다고 했다. 그림도 마찬가지로 너무 많은 생각을 가지고 그린다거나, 과하게 표현하려고 애쓰면 오히려 좋은 그림이 나오지 않는다. 단순명료하게 표현하여 통일된 감각을 전하는 것, 그림과 요리 모두에서 그가 추구하는 바다.
그는 여러 작품 중에서도 자신만의 이야기를 담기 위해 시간과 공을 많이 들인 그림이 개인적으로 더 마음이 간다고 했다. 한 가지 주제, 하나의 이야기를 가만히 응시하고 그것을 캔버스에 담아 온전히 자신의 것으로 만든 작품들이다. 복잡한 현대 사회 속에서 모두가 조금씩 헝클어진 마음을 가지고 살아가면서, 무언가 한 가지를 그렇게 또렷이 바라보고 온전히 느낀 적이 있었는지 돌이켜 본다. Shawn Park의 작품에서는 전하고자 하는 마음이 오롯이 하나여서 더 선명하고 생생하다.
전시 <New Menu>는 우리가 아는 식재료의 겉모습에서 그가 새로운 단면을 발견한 것처럼, 셰프로서 활동해온 Shawn Park에게서 작가라는 새로운 단면을 발견하는 시도다. 누군가는 두 가지 활동이 전혀 다르지 않냐고 물을지도 모르겠다. 하지만 미술에서 시작해 음식을 향한 작품, 반대로 음식에서 시작해 미술로 향한 작품들 모두, 작가가 자신만의 눈으로 발견한 세계를 표현한다는 점에서 같다. 접근 방식이나 작업 매체가 다르더라도 예술은 결국 작가가 추구하는 하나의 구심점으로 향한다. 표현하려는 생각이 같다면, 음식과 그림 모두 Shawn Park의 창작물이자 같은 세계로 향하는 하나의 행위가 아닐까.
작가는 작품의 완성에 대해서, 도달해야 할 지점이 있는 것은 아니라고 말한다. 그리는 과정에서 끊임없이 새로운 모습이 나타나며 변화하기 때문에 작가 자신이 완성하고 싶은 시점을 스스로 결정해야 한다는 것이다. 그가 표현하는 세계도 마찬가지다. 정통 이탈리아 요리에 한국적 레시피를 더해 셰프 Shawn Park만의 요리를 만들고, 요리에 담았던 생각을 캔버스 위에 옮겨 담아 작가 Shawn Park의 작품을 만든 것처럼 그가 창작하는 방식은 고정되지 않는다. 작가는 자신이 앞으로 무엇을 어떻게 더 표현하는 사람이 될지 알 수 없다고 했다. 그러나 그 표현의 방향은 Shawn Park이 만드는 세계로 향할 것이며, 이는 스스로 완성이라고 말할 때까지 끝나지 않을 것이다.

Journey for a pure and simple creation

In Italian food, the characters of the ingredients are very distinct. The taste of wine is also vivid. In our world, there is beauty given off by complex harmony, but there are also moments that require simple beauty that clearly stands out. The beings in the artist’s paintings are as clear as Italian food without any chance of misunderstanding. Shawn Park as an artist follows the direction of the mind rather than pursuing entangled harmony under careful planning.

Food and art have been closely related for centuries. In addition to the masterpieces depicting scenes of eating and drinking, there are artists who reproduce one type of food repeatedly, such as Wayne Thiebaud who paints desserts. Some contemporary artists even set up a restaurant in art galleries and cook themselves. Rirkrit Tiravanija, in ‘untitled (free)’ (1992), offered Pad Thai and curry to visitors, an attempt to subvert the noble space of an art gallery and make it into a platform shared with the public by dragging it down to everyday life while communicating with the audience at the same time. In multiple ways, artists have been drawing new insights from the characteristics of food and eating.

Differentiating from artists who started from art to find food, Shawn Park’s journey goes from food to art. When dealing with food ingredients every day, you get to see the beauty that are hard for others to find such as unique colors of natural ingredients and cross-sections seen when cut. These are new aspects only caught by the ones who have seen and touched up close. The artist expresses the beauty he discovers every day in a very clear way, without any decoration.

The artist believes that when there are too many pretty things together, it is hard to appreciate all of them and it is the same when even if you put in all the good ingredients at once, it does not necessarily make a delicious dish. Likewise, if you paint with too many thoughts in your mind or try to express too much, you will not end up with a good painting. To express in a clear simple way and convey a unified sense, this is what Park pursues in both painting and cooking.

Among his works, the artist feels more attached to the paintings that took a lot of time and effort to capture his own story. Those are works he created by gazing at one single topic, or one single story, and putting it on canvas to make it completely his own. While we all live in this complicated modern society with a somewhat tangled mind, we need to look back and question whether we have ever looked at something that clearly and felt it that completely. In Park’s works, since there is only one complete mind the artist wants to convey, it is more clear and vivid.

As Park discovered new aspects from common appearances of food ingredients, the exhibition <New Menu> is an attempt to discover a new aspect of Shawn Park as an artist who has been working as a chef. Some may say the two activities seem completely different. The two, however, are the same as the result of expression of the world discovered through the eyes of the artist. Even using different approaches or different mediums, the art eventually heads toward one central point the artist pursues. If the thoughts being expressed are the same, both dishes and paintings would be Park’s creation, and at the same time one same act heading for the same world.

When it comes to completion of work, Park says there is no destination he must reach. As new images keep appearing and some change during the process, the artist himself decides when to complete it. The same goes for the world Park expresses. As he added Korean recipes to authentic Italian cuisine to create unique dishes of Chef Shawn Park, and then moved the thoughts from dishes onto canvas to create the works of Artist Shawn Park, his way of creation is never fixed. The artist cannot be sure what and how he will create by moving forward. Yet, we can be sure the direction of his expression will head toward the world Shawn Park creates, and will not end until he decides the journey is complete.
